Esta locomotora tuvo su origen en la Línea Férrea del Oeste (Dave Deyo).  Pasó a la Central Mercedita como la número 5.  Después a la Central Aguirre, luego al Parque de Bayamón y finalmente al Tren del Sur de Arroyo.

One of the saddest losses tied with the demise of Tren del Sur, was the oldest piece of exiting Puerto Rican railroad history. It was a treasure that no one realized. Among the several diesel-mechanical locomotives on the property was what was a Baldwin mechanical locomotive that started its life on the Linea Ferrea del Oeste between Bayamon and Catano. When that railroad ended service, a gentleman named Mario Castro Fernandez purchased the locomotive and in his shops in Caparra had it completely rebuilt with a new motor and radiator from Cummins Reliable Diesel. He advertised it for a very short period of time, and Central Mercedita in Ponce purchased it to use on their railway. It spent a number of years there in
several different paint schemes and several different numbers. When it was retired, it went to the new railroad park in Bayamon that would later be purchased to make room for the Bayamon station of the Tren Urbano. From there it went to Arroyo for the Tren del Sur, where it would remain until present time. Built December of 1919, it was serial number 52698, 65 horsepower gas-mechanical, was #8 on LFO roster. Here’s a history of the unit in photographs. Note that the wheels are inside the frame with the counterweights outside, and that they are connected with a rod typical of steam locomotives. The frame is also a lightweight version of a steam locomotive frame. The photo at the park in Bayamon is from the ROGER APONTE Collection, and the original BLW picture was from a business card and the reverse side had all the specifications. The last two photos show the conditions of the locomotive at the Tren del Sur showing its gradual deterioration. At Mercedita, the locomotive wore a yellow paint scheme and the #11. When taken over by the CAdePR, it was repainted in red and renumbered #5. Try keeping up with all of these changes on so many different resales on the island, and you can imagine I kept very busy in the last 45 years. ENJOY!!

Línea Férrea del Oeste (Valdés Railroad and Ferry Line), Bayamón, Cataño, San Juan – meter gauge / Ferrocarril de Bayamón a Cataño

 Las estaciones de caña tenían buzones de metal para colocar los conduces.  Cada vagón tenía un conduce.  Los conduces tenían información como el número del vagón llenado, donde y como se recogió la caña entre otros datos (Ver foto de un conduce).  La persona encargada de la estación le entregaba al conductor del tren un conduce por cada vagón llenado.  Esto se hacía personalmente.  Pero si el personal no estaba en la estación se echaban los conduces en el buzón.

No se acostumbraba mover un vagón lleno sin un conduce.  En la central se pesaban los vagones para conocer el peso de su contenido. El peso del vagón se conocía por su número, el cual estaba escrito en el conduce.

Cane stations had metal boxes for waybill / bill of lading forms.  Each loaded wagon had a waybill which included car number, information about how and where the cane was harvested, etc. Waybills were usually given personally by the person in charge of the station to the conductor of the train.  However, waybills were put in the boxes if they could not be delivered personally.

Cars without a waybill were usually not moved.  At the mill, cars were weighed in order to know the weight of the contents.  The weight of the cars was known by their number, which was written on the waybill.

Observe que el barco lleva vagones.  Estos son levantados y puestos en la vía y viceversa. Esta operación existió para la década de 1960.  No he podido localizar fotos aéreas ni diagramas de la vía.

Observe that the ship carries railroad cars.  These are lifted and placed on the railroad tracks and vice versa.  This operation existed during the 1960s.  I have not been able to locate aerial photos and track diagrams of the Seatrain operation.

Perdonen la calidad de las fotos.  Fotos tomadas hace más de 30 años.  Pero tienen su valor.

Las centrales Aguirre y Mercedita estaban unidas por la Ponce & Guayama Railroad.  No intercambiaban vagones de caña por las diferentes formas de vaciarlos.   Yo vi movimientos de caña del área de la Central Mercedita hacia la Central Aguirre en vagones de Aguirre.  Central Mercedita operaba los trenes entre la central en Ponce hasta el Río Coamo en Santa Isabel.  La Central Aguirre operaba los trenes entre el Río Coamo y Arroyo.  Ver los mapas.

Centrales (sugar mills) Aguirre and Mercedita were on the Ponce & Guayama Railroad.  They did not interchange sugar cane cars because of the way they unloaded the cane.   I saw cane being moved from the area of Central Mercedita to Central Aguirre in cane cars from Aguirre.  Central Mercedita operated the trains from the mill in Ponce to the Coamo River in Santa Isabel.  Central Aguirre operated the trains from the Coamo River to the town of Arroyo.  See the maps.

Signal reminder for locomotive engineers.  In this case, the engineer was to blow two long and two short horn blasts.  This is the only type of whistle signal that I saw on the Ponce & Guayama Railroad, which included Central Mercedita.  Photo taken at Central Mercedita.

Central Cambalache Viaduct, Arecibo.  John W. Este viaducto era bastante ancho ya que por debajo pasaba la línea principal de la A.R.R.Co. paralela a un ramal del ferrocarril de la Central Cambalache. Justo antes de la entrada este del viaducto (km.81.340) había un desvío que conectaba las vías de la A.R.R.Co con el Ramal Cambalache que llegaba al batey de la central. Las vías de la A.R.R.Co. eran de 1 metro de ancho y las de Cambalache de 30 pulgadas, por lo que este ramal tuvo 3 rieles para tener los dos anchos de vía. From Jan 25 to April 27, 2014 there is an exhibition of Curious George at the C3TEC, Caguas, Puerto Rico.  Among the activities and exhibitions there is a O-Gauge (tinplate) layout.  Lionel and Plasticville among others, has been used.

Modelismo Ferroviario / Model Railroading – Pasatiempo (hobby) de trenes en miniatura ( tren maqueta)

El pasatiempo consta de reproducir en miniatura, usando modelos y/o juguetes las operaciones de los trenes verdaderos.  Por ejemplo, se puede reproducir las operaciones de una parte del Tren Urbano, una central, estación de pasajeros, o inventarse un escenario. Uno construye o compra las estructuras o crea estructuras nuevas usando y juntando partes de modelos (kits) ya existentes, árboles, vías, vagones, locomotoras, figuras de personas y animales, carros, etc.

Layout originally constructed by Stephen Brown, now owned by Tony Hill. Using 9mm gauge track in 7mm scale to represent a 15″ gauge estate railway, this layout caught my eye in Railway Modeller about 15 years ago and it’s great to see it’s still around. The new owner has remodelled the scenery but it definitely keeps the spirit of the original. The whole layout can rotate to keep a moving train continously in view as the scenery passes by.
