The first “locomotives” of Puerto Rico were animals.  Oxen, horses, mules, and donkeys were used.

Las primeras “locomotoras” de Puerto Rico fueron animales.  Se usaron bueyes, caballos, mulas, y burros.  Los ferrocarriles que usaban animales para arrastre se conocían como ferrocarriles de sangre.

Animals were also used in the sugar industry for moving cane cars from the fields or moving cars at loading stations.  The first tram for public transport was in the town of Mayagüez and used animals.

Se usaron tranvías de sangre en los cañaverales para mover vagones de caña y para mover carros en el área de carga (grúas).  El primer ferrocarril de servicio público operó  en el pueblo de Mayagüez y era de sangre.
